Description
This 1992 Rockwell International silicon wafer is a great early example of how the micro-controller was first combined with analog and digital subsystems. It contains a microprocessor plus memory ( micro-controller ) and the needed peripherals to do a specific job. This particular one has A/D converters on board and was built specifically to control a Fax machine. The term System On a Chip (SOC) was coined at the time to describe this type combo chip.
One of the more interesting wafers I've seen lately. Several curious details are on it, including a wafer art bug, and some of the peripheral sections are clearly visible, labeled with functional descriptions and names of those on the project etched right into it.
SOCs
have been developed into ever more sophisticated machines.Today's chips can carry more than a thousand times the components on these 30 year old chips and many have several embedded microprocessors all on the same single chip.
