The Byte computer was produced in the first half of the 1990s by the Brest Electromechanical plant (BEMZ), which in turn was the parent company of the Brest production Association of computer equipment (BPO SVT).
The Byte computer is a clone of the widely known ZX-Spectrum computer. Why clone? Because the original ZX-Spectrum, to simplify the design, reduce the cost of production and to protect against copying, contained an ULA chip, in which the main part of the computer's circuit was" programmed". It goes without saying that clones do not 100% repeat the architecture and features of the original ZX-Spectrum, which is expressed in incomplete compatibility with all software written for the ZX-Spectrum. The Byte computer is no exception.
The technical characteristics of the Byte computer are basically the same as the original ZX-Spectrum:
- Processor-Z80A (or domestic analog KR1858VM1, VM3, or German U880)
- Processor clock speed-3.5 MHz
- The amount of RAM - 48 KB;
- ROM size-16KB;
- The number of versions of the ROM - 2 (with Russian fonts and support for additional keys on the keyboard and a second version of the ROM without Russian fonts for better compatibility with the original ZX-Spectrum);
- Screen resolution - 256 x 192 points;
- RF output for connecting to the TV's antenna input;
- RGB output for connecting to color monitors;
- Own three-channel sound synthesizer based on the KR580VI53 chip;
- Extended keyboard;
- System connector (not the same as the original ZX-Spectrum system connector).
