The HMS Bounty was originally built as a small merchant vessel. The ship was constructed in 1784 the shipyards at Kingston-upon-Hull in northern England. The vessel was originally built and named the Bethia and spent nearly four years in service as a merchant vessel running between England and western ports in continental Europe.
In 1787, the Royal Navy purchased the vessel and began a retrofit program for the ship. It was renamed the HMS Bounty and outfitted with more storage space and armed for protection. The Royal Navy had a very specific purpose in its allocation of the Bounty: the breadfruit expedition. The purpose of this expedition was go sail to the South Pacific and retrieve specimens from the breadfruit plant to transplant to plantations in the West Indies.
Queen Elizabeth II features on the obverse side of 2021 Cook Islands Bounty Silver Coins. This effigy of Her Majesty is one of the most popular in Commonwealth nations. Designed in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley for the Royal Mint, this effigy shows the Queen in right-profile relief wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara.
The HMS Bounty sails once again in the reverse design element of 2021 1 oz Bounty Silver Coins. The depiction captures the full glory of the ship. Its time spent in the Royal Navy was short-lived as a portion of the crew mutinied while the ship was in Tahiti harvesting breadfruit plants to take to the West Indies in the Caribbean. The mutineers eventually burned the ship.
