    Description

This sale is for a quantity of one 1.5 inch Mullard FCH211 Hex inverting NAND/NOR gate silicon wafer as shown. It's one of the oldest and smallest fully processed wafers I've ever offered for sale. Comes with case shown.
Started in the UK 1920, Mullard was close behind the US to the cutting edge of semiconductor technology in the 1950s-1960s. Mullard was also a sister company of Phillips who had operated a solid state physics research lab since 1930. While keeping a close eye on the developments at Bell Labs in the US and realizing their significance they wasted no time in producing semiconductors of their own for the market. Amazingly they were selling semiconductor diodes in early in the 1950s and transistors by the mid 1950s.
The logic on this wafer was actually produced as a second source device for the American standard logic chips in the early 1960s. Known as Diode Transistor Logic (DTL) it is an early form of the IC design using the planar process. You can actually see the individual components with a simple inspection microscope, because of it's primitive large features.
