FAQ : COPPER PREMIUM WHY IS IT SO MUCH?
Answer: Copperโs high premiums can be attributed to two key factors: Quantity and Processing
Because copper is chiefly a metal of industry, gigantic quantities often change hands.
Copperโs current price of about .50 per pound, for instance, is the base price on โpaper contractsโ for the delivery of tons of copper โ not just a few ounces or pounds (as is often the case with the copper coins and bars listed at Provident Metalsโ online store).
If youโre looking to invest in a few ounces or pounds of copper, the spot price quickly becomes irrelevant as it does not account for the real price of bullion.
The other key factor contributing to copperโs high premiums (compared to gold and silver) is processing: copperโs inherent properties make it a difficult metal to work with.
Take gold and silver, for example. Each melts easily and neither of them oxidizes too easily.
Copper, on the other hand, immediately oxidizes when heat is applied.
Therefore, special techniques and chemicals are used to produce copper without bubbles or contaminants.
On top of these special (and expensive!) techniques, the final price for a one ounce copper coin or a one pound copper bar includes the sizing, stamping and shipping costs. As well as many other factors like supply/demand, but the main factor why copper bars/rounds have such a higher premium than there more valuable counter parts is because of the time and effort that gos into making each piece, as well as cost of raw materials, propane price, sanding and polishing grits, electricity, etc the cost to produce one of these bars/rounds or Art pieces is quite high.
Hope that helps some of you understand or start to understand why bullion companyโs charge around 3$ per OZ of .999 copper!
